چکیده

Foundations for iterated admissibility (i.e., the iterated removal of weakly dominated strategies) need to confront a fundamental challenge. On the one hand, admissibility requires that a player consider every strategy of their opponents possible. On the other hand, reasoning that the opponents are rational requires ruling out certain strategies. Brandenburger, Friedenberg and Keisler’s (BFK, Econometrica, 2008) foundations for iterated admissibility address this challenge with two ingredients: lexicographic beliefs and the concept of “assumption.” However, BFK restrict attention to lexicographic beliefs whose supports are essentially disjoint. This restriction does not have a compelling behavioral rationale, or a clear intuitive interpretation. At the same time, it plays a crucial role in BFK’s foundations for iterated admissibility—specifically, in their analysis of assumption. We provide an alternate characterization of assumption, which applies to all lexicographic beliefs. We also characterize two variants of assumption, based on two extensions of ‘weak dominance’ to infinite state spaces. These notions of assumption coincide with BFK’s notion when the state space is finite and lexicographic beliefs have disjoint support; but they are different in more general settings. Leveraging these characterization results, we show that disjoint supports do not play a role in the foundations for iterated admissibility. JEL classification: C72; D81; D83

Agreeing to disagree with lexicographic prior beliefs

The robustness of Aumann’s seminal agreement theorem with respect to the common prior assumption is considered. More precisely, we show by means of an example that two Bayesian agents with almost identical prior beliefs can agree to completely disagree on their posterior beliefs. Secondly, a more detailed agent model is introduced where posterior beliefs are formed on the basis of lexicographic...

Epistemic equivalence of extended belief hierarchies

In this paper, we introduce a notion of epistemic equivalence between hierarchies of conditional beliefs and hierarchies of lexicographic beliefs, thus extending the standard equivalence results of Halpern (2010) and Brandenburger et al. (2007) to an interactive setting, and we show that there is a Borel surjective function, mapping each conditional belief hierarchy to its epistemically equival...

Lexicographic Probabilities as Similarity-Weighted Frequencies

How does a decision maker form beliefs from a database of past observations? This paper gives an axiomatization of a decision maker who filters the databases for relevant observations, and forms his belief by similarity-weighted average of the beliefs induced by each relevant observation. This result extends the axiomatization of Billot, Gilboa, Samet and Schmeidler (2005) by endogenizing the s...

Commonassumption of Rationality

In this paper, weprovide an epistemic characterization of iterated admissibility (IA), i.e., iterated elimination of weakly dominated strategies. We show that rationality and common assumption of rationality (RCAR) in complete lexicographic type structures implies IA, and that there exist such structures in which RCAR can be satisfied. Our result is unexpected in light of a negative result in B...

Strong Belief and Weak Assumption

Battigalli and Siniscalchi’s [Journal of Economic Theory 106, 356-391 (2002)] notion of “strong belief”in conditional probability systems and Yang’s [Journal of Economic Theory, forthcoming] notion of “weak assumption”in lexicographic probability systems are unified by the same requirements on preferences. Our analysis, hence, reconciles the tension between Battigalli and Siniscalchi’s characte...
